Are you aware of these hidden banking charges?

There are some hidden banking charges you probably wouldn’t be aware of. Financial advisors always recommend that you must get to know the banking charges in and out before you leap at the enticing services being offered by your bank.  These so called hidden charges come with a price.

Standing Instruction fee: Banks offer to relieve you of the trouble of remembering regular payments. While this facility helps you avoid late payments, you must be prepared to shell out between Rs 50 and Rs 150 per instruction. PS: Private banks charge more than the public ones.

Cash Payment Penalty:  Do you have the habit of leaving your credit card bill payments for the last day just before the bank closes? This flexibility will cost you Rs 100 each time. Don’t be surprised. This is a relatively new entrant to the schedule of bank fees.

Banking Channel Usage fee:  Many banks allow only a limited number of free cash transactions every quarter. Very few banks mention   upfront that only the first few transactions on any channel ( Internet banking, phone banking, ATM and branches). There is a myth that Net Banking is a free facility. Initiating a real time gross settlement transaction- an instant fund transfer mechanism for over Rs 1 lakh – costs at least Rs 50 per transaction. Also, every time you go to the branch to request a reissuance of your Internet user ID or password –or miss hearing the option on the IVR system – be prepared to pay Rs 50.

At Par cheque fee: Most banks offer payable-at-oar cheques , which are treated as local clearing cheques across the bank’s branch network. While most private banks offer at least one such cheque book free per quarter, others charge Rs 3-25 per cheque. It is advisable that you go through the bank’s schedule of charges and decline such a chequebook if you do not require the facility.

Penalty on carelessness: For some banks, stupidity is a chargeable offence. At a leading private bank, for instance, for instance, if you deposit cash in the cheque drop box, you need to pay a fine of Rs 100; Rs 300, if the deposit amount is over Rs 500.

Amazing things about Amazon.com

amazon_craveThis American e-commerce company was incorporated by Jeff Bezos in 1994.Its initial services were restricted to an online bookstore, Cadabra.com but soon afterwards it diversified its products and started selling VHSs, CDs, VCD’s, DVDs, computer software, apparel, electronic items, toys, grocery etc and the list goes on. It started with selling products over the Internet. Being traded as AMZN in NASDAQ; it was one of the hot stocks of dot.com bubble in the late 1990’s.Initially a lot of critics were skeptic about this business model and it took a while for amazon.com to set the cash registers ringing. This company registered its first annual profit only in 2003 and since then there was no looking back. The company continued to make profits and generated revenue of about US$ 15 billion approx in 2007. According to Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney, “Amazon has one of the best fundamental outlooks among all U.S. Internet stocks going into 2008.”It is indeed quite blatant that Amazon’s stock has climbed 143.9% since the start of last year. The headquarters of this retail giant is located in Seattle, Washington. It has also established its presence in many other countries which include United kingdom, France, Canada, Germany, Austria, China and Japan. Currently Amazon provides global shipping only on selected products. I am sure you must have heard of IMDB, which provides an online database to almost all the movies worldwide. Well, this company was bought by Amazon in 1998.For a list of all its acquisitions you refer to the internet. It would be beneficial to the consumers if this online retail giant can extend its global shipping on many more products. I would also like to see Amazon initiate its operations in India soon. Will that happen? Let’s wait and watch.
